For 5 days, London was chaotic. It was described as 'a war zone'; youths were branded 'yobs' and the police, to be perfectly frank, could not handle it. But why did this happen? Was it ALL really "opportunistic criminality" as claimed by the government? Surely the thousands, or possibly millions, that took to the streets were not all willing to risk prison for a new television? In my opinion, it was something bigger.

As London moved into August, there had already been protests and riots about university fees and the scrapping of EMA. David Cameron and the Tory party, on the whole, were unpopular in the capital. The cuts have been well documented as a result of these demonstrations and people all over the country are opening their eyes to the political battle between David Cameron and everyday people who can't afford private school. When you think carefully about it, the logic behind Cameron's cuts is minimal. The people of tomorrow, the next generation, are being victimised by things the government 'has' to do. Politicians are able to claim money for their lunch, yet, as of next year, some young people will barely be able to afford their lunch? The government have claimed that the riots as "opportunistic criminality" to overshadow the real problems in some inner city communities. A majority of those that looted may have done it for the fun, to get revenge on their long-term enemy that is the police. However, it must be considered that these people could have been doing this to make the country realise the severity of problems in deprived areas; to make everyone realise that the standard cuts that Mr Cameron is making are affecting the futures of so many young people in Hackney and other London Boroughs. University may not always be a realistic option for people in deprived areas; but with the fees being raised to 9,000 a year; in many cases, it will not be an option at all. I did not condone the violence and brutality of the riots in London and around the UK, I feel it is ridiculous that people thought that destroying their community would help their cause in any way. All in all, I hope that David Cameron opens his eyes to the damage he is causing around the UK and realises that changes have to be made to his running of the country.
